Progressive Christianity?

[SOURCE]

This is because those who champion the phrase invariably mean moving beyond historical, biblical Christianity. They see the orthodox Christian faith as old-fashioned, restrictive, intolerant and repressive. They want to move beyond the faith once delivered to the saints to a new, trendy, and – quite plainly – heterodox version of the faith.

Sometimes I read a sentence or two and think, I wonder if he realises what he just said.  This is of course Bill Muehlenberg, from his website called CultureWatch with the tag line ‘commentary on issues of the day…’

He’s having a go at the Uniting Church because they dare to have a different belief than him, they dare to be ‘progressive’1.  He says they see him as old-fashioned, restrictive, intolerant and repressive…… give that a moment to sink in….

Nothing further to say.

  1. Progressive Christianity is a branch of that faith with a strong emphasis on social justice, something conservative fundamentalists have trouble with SOURCE

Progressive Christianity sounds a bit like Progressive Judaism, where all people tend to be treated equally and with respect.

Well, that IS a fine idea. An even finer idea is to keep the Progressive and drop the Christianity and Judaism.

“Progressive Christianity” sounds like an oxymoron to me.
Something that you hear from religious people is that they appreciate the constancy of religion. They find comfort in the fact that nothing changes over the centuries, and any up-to-date thinking is dismissed as just a fad. However, the ability of religion to be relevant to our world requires that it adapt to change. Herein lies the dilemma of the religious: they cannot adapt to change without thinking for themselves, yet by joining a religion they have eschewed any personal responsibility.

I’m with you OFL – drop the religion and just be progressive!
And of course, prayforrain – despite what the religious think, their religion does change over time, we don’t really stone people anymore, we don’t keep slaves and we don’t kill our children because they disobeyed. Funny how religions change with the times.
