Couples Register (Part 2)

The Victorian Government has passed the Relationships Bill which will allow couples to register their relationship, so same sex and opposite sex couples can use it from December 2008. (My first story here). The full transcript of the debate is in the Hansard here – its not too thrilling a read.

My real reason for writing is about this mob: The Salt Shakers. They call the it a sad day for Victoria. Clearly they believe that somehow Victoria is worse off for allowing couples to register their relationship.  Sad indeed.  What’s sad is that they hold to some crappy values in a book of fantasy that has done more harm than good in the world.  I’m glad that the bible (although I prefer to think of it as the babble) has no sway over my life and would gladly see it moved from the ‘non-fiction’ area to the ‘fantasy fiction’ area.

Lets focus on the important stuff, how to reduce our consumption, how to fuel our industries, how to house people, how to stop people being poor.  Relationship registers shouldn’t be required at all.  You can shack up with who ever you like – its all a side issue and stops us looking at the real issues going on in the State, the nation and the world.

Having said all that – well done Victoria!
