Liberal Party supports discrimination

[SOURCE]

Geoff Shaw is a newly elected member of the Victorian Parliament.  When he made his first speech in the house1, he used a standard acknowledgement that is commonly used to show respect to the indigenous people. Something like this:

I would like to show my respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, of elders past and present, on which this event takes place2

Shaw said this:

In taking my place in the Legislative Assembly it is appropriate for me to acknowledge the original owner of the land on which we stand — God, the Creator, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of the Bible. What a blessing that the Creator has given us stewardship of this place, and what a responsibility we have to govern here in Victoria and govern well.

It’s like saying, “Hey, fuck you!” to the indigenous people.

He’s now taken his pathetic religious views and hurled more insults at a very reasonable question from Jakob Reuben Quilligan3.  Jakob made the bold statement that because religious organisations that accept tax payers money run public institutions, (hospitals, support agencies and so on) they shouldn’t be allowed to discriminate on the basis of sexuality.

The new Victorian Liberal party has rolled back the discrimination laws allowing church based religious organisations to again dismiss people because they are gay, having children outside wedlock or just simply don’t share the same faith.  That’s horrible.

Back to Shaw, Member for Frankston, his response to one of his constituents is to insult him:

You state that you ” want to work, live and love freely during the course of my life, and I want to do that without thinking that I can’t”. What if I loved driving 150kms per hour in residential areas? What if there was a convicted sex offender who stated that, or a child molester? Can they still do what they want? Under your statement the answer is yes.

What an arse.  This born again christian radical compares illegal activities such as a sex offender or a child molester to the perfectly acceptable notion that no citizen should be discriminated against.

But then, to make matters worse, he went to ground, can’t get a comment out of him and others are left to leap to his defence:

Liberal MP Clem Newton-Brown said he’d spoken with his colleague yesterday afternoon and that Shaw said weekend media reports of the email exchange did not reflect his views4

Ah, that explains it.  Shaw sat at his keyboard and expressed the views of someone else.  Glad that’s been cleared up.

Liberal MP Clem baby also said:

Geoff Shaw has sincerely apologised to Mr Quilligan for the offence he caused.

That’s great, he’s seen the error of his ways.  He doesn’t want to talk to the media:

Shaw has so far refused to answer direct media inquiries regarding the comments.

There’s a Twitter campaign to have the Premier sack Shaw, have a look.

Shaw takes his fundamentalist religious attitudes into a secular parliament, he uses his speech to spread his vile lies while showing massive disrespect to the indigenous people of Australia and then as an added trick goes on to insult not just Jakob but all people in Victoria who find special conditions for churches reprehensible.

Where’s that sack.

    Bruce

    Great summary.

Is there an equivalent to the twiiter campaign for the slightly technologically behind like me?

    • Bruce says:

Not that I know of, I’ll keep you posted, I guess an email to the Premier would be a good place to start, I’m also guessing you’ve done that 🙂

  2. Eric Glare says:

As far as I can determine the Equal Opportunity Amendment Bill 2011 has been tabled but not yet subject to vote and therefore the law has not changed. It is incorrect to state “The new Victorian Liberal party has rolled back the discrimination laws allowing church based religious organisations….”

    • Bruce says:

Quite right, I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before the proposed amendments become law. If they fail to be enacted I’ll amend.

  3. I’m quite fond of this letter sent to MP Geoff Shaw today:

    Mr Shaw

Your comments, apologies and dissimulations notwithstanding are a disgusting disgrace. You are a blight on public life in Victoria and Australia.

The recent passing of our last surviving World War I veteran only serves to remind us all that he fought to preserve the freedoms of someone like me, from someone like you.

    Regretfully yours
